collections: library digitization projects.
The University Library started planning a series of locally-based digitization projects in 2002. Beginning late in 2003, the first products began to appear in various locations. The following highlights the collections and areas of initial focus.
Preserving the History and Culture of Afghanistan [Arthur Paul Afghanistan Collection]
Purpose: Preservation, some public access.
Materials: Books, maps, some documents and photographs.
Languages: English, Dari, Pushto, etc.
Status: In progress.
Description: Using equipment funded by a 2002 grant from the University of Nebraska Foundation, digitization of selected materials in this nationally recognized collection is intended primarily for preservation. Whenever possible -- that is, when materials are in the public domain or the Library has publication rights -- digitized materials will be made available to the public through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Digital Commons.
Government Documents
Purpose: Public access.
Materials: State of Nebraska and federal government documents.
Languages: English.
Status: In planning, materials selected. See list of Candidate Titles.
Description: The Government Documents Collection includes many documents of historical and scientific interest. Many published during the first half of the 20th century and earlier received very limited distribution and researchers often have trouble locating copies. We will target government documents of particular relevance to Nebraska and the Great Plains region, but some documents of national importance which remain undigitized by any other institution will also be included. Access will be provided through the Stax repositories.
University Archives & Special Collections
Purpose: Exhibition, some public access.
Materials: Photographs and documents related to the history of the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Rare or unique items held in the Specials Collections of the University Library.
Languages: English.
Status: In development.
Description: Many Library users are unaware of the rich body of materials housed in University Archives and the Library's Special Collections. Consequently, the initial focus of digitization will be on exhibition. Some use of the Stax repositories for public access to documents of particular importance to the University and community is planned.
